How HODL Meme Reveals The Truth About Bitcoin

As evolution is determined by the survival of the fittest, persistent Bitcoin memes also reinforce the network's best qualities. Memes are plentiful in the Bitcoin community, acting both as entertainment, signs of solidarity, and sources of construction. Most of the big Bitcoinists before me have noticed this, and I encourage those interested to look into the great articles by Bob Simon, SEANSTACKIN, and Jameson Lopp for more information. In this article, I hope to contribute to this discussion by highlighting the evolutionary dynamics behind the existence of memes in the Bitcoin community. To begin with, the word "meme" was popularized by Richard Dawkins in the 1970s, but comes from the Greek word "mimeme" meaning "something to be imitated". Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist, became aware of cultural ideas as well, as genes were mutated, copied, and selected over time due to evolutionary pressures. Memes represent the strongest part of our culture In the field of biology, genes change an organism's capacity to adapt given the environmental constraints to which the organism is exposed. Genes that improve an organism's adaptive capacity increase the probability of reproduction, increasing the likelihood that the gene itself will replicate within a population. However, the replication of genes across successive generations is not perfect, and the emergence of new genes happens through replication errors accompanied by random mutations. In a sense, genes compete with other genes for their own survival and for incorporation into the host organism's genetic makeup. Genes that improve an organism's adaptability can be expected to outperform rival genes over time. This process of replication, mutation, and selection was described by Charles Darwin (although Darwin did not know genes at the time) and is known as evolution in nature.
