BitcoinTVAppleSpotifyGoogleLibsynovercastin did another interview in this episode of Aaron Van Wirdum’s “the Van Wirdum Sjorsnado”, without permanent co-host Sjors Provoost. Instead, he was accompanied by Lawrence Naum of Blockstream, one of Jade’s wallet developers, and Ben Kaufman, one of the creators of the spectre account, which was specifically designed to work with hardware wallets.
Van Wirdum, Naum, and Kaufman discussed what hardware wallets are and the design compromises adopted by various hardware wallets, with particular focus on Trezor, Ledger, and Coldcard. In this light, Naum and Kaufman explained what protected elements and secure chips are, and why some hardware portfolios prefer to use such chips more often than others.
Naum then explained the issues caused by the Jade purse. October also detailed how an October server-based security step was used to further protect the Jade wallet, and outlined some additional differences in hardware wallet design.
Finally, Wirdum’s Naum and Kaufman discussed whether the concept of hardware wallets was a good idea in the first place, or perhaps it would be better to Use custom smartphones to store your bitcoin.
