Former Zcash developer to lead decentralized Twitter social media project Bluesky

On December 11, 2019, Twitter’s CEO announced that the company is funding a project aimed at creating a decentralized social media standard. Jack Dorsey said the ultimate goal of the project, called” Bluesky, ” was for Twitter to become a standard customer. A year and eight months later, Bluesky announced that former zcash project software engineer Jay Graber would lead the Bluesky initiative.

“I am delighted to announce that I will be managing BlueSky,” Graber tweeted Monday. “Twitter’s attempt to decentralize social media.”

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey also welcomed Graber’s involvement in the project on Monday. “Jay will lead the Blues,” Dorsey tweeted. “Another step towards the decentralization of Twitter and social media. Now we can move much faster and with code.”

“Twitter is funding a small independent team of five open source architects, engineers and designers to create an open and decentralized standard for social media development,”Dorsey said of the project in December 2019.

Dorsey added:

The goal is to ensure that Twitter ultimately becomes a customer of that standard. Twitter opened up very early, many seeing the potential for a decentralized internet standard such as SMTP (email protocol). For a variety of reasons, we took a different path, quite plausible at the time, and increasingly centralised Twitter.

Dorsey explained that BlueSky is trying to change the central social media model, and the Twitter CEO is also bringing in bitcoin. “Square is doing this for bitcoin with Square Crypto,” he said.
